Our 3 brains
Your brain has over a 100 Billion Neurons, the cells that process and transmit information. It is where synapses, electrical impulses and hormones talk to each other, which is what allows for consciousness and awareness. Most importantly, it is what gives you the ability to identify pattern and make sense of the world.
Your heart has more than 39 million neurons. If you have ever listened to your heart in life, you are probably not surprised that your heart is a brain. The heart sends as many messages to the brain as it receives. It is always sending emotional signals, so think of it as the emotional brain. It is connected to what you value in life and how you feel.
Your Gut consist of two nerves centres called the myenteric and the submucosal, which have approximately 100 million neurons. This is more than the spinal cord. The gut produces 70% of the hormone cortisol, which is released during stressful periods to regulate metabolism, control of blood sugar, and assist with memory formulation. This gut brain is also responsible for processing information during sleep. Did you know that for every message that gets send down to the gut, 8 messages get send back up to the brain?!
We are beautifully and wonderfully made, connected! I believe we need to respect that, so we can live with purpose and intention. What we feed our bodies and goes into our digestive system, does not only impact our gut but also our brain and our heart.
